Grid-to-generator transition equipment is a descriptive term for the entire category of transfer switches, which facilitate the shift of an electrical load from the primary utility power (the grid) to an on-site backup generator (the alternate source). This equipment is vital not only for seamless power continuity but also for the electrical safety of personnel and equipment. The transition process involves four key steps managed by the transfer switch: Monitoring, Initiation, Transfer, and Retransfer. The initiation step involves the ATS controller sensing a voltage or frequency deviation in the utility power and sending a start signal to the generator. The transfer is the physical switching of the load connections. 


The type of equipment used determines the quality and speed of the transition:

Open Transition: The load is briefly disconnected from both sources ("break-before-make"), causing a momentary power interruption.

Closed Transition (Bumpless): The load is briefly connected to both sources simultaneously ("make-before-break") for a fraction of a second, resulting in a seamless transition. The choice of equipment is directly correlated with the end-user's load sensitivity. As loads become more sensitive (e.g., electronics, IT), the industry relies more heavily on Closed Transition and Static Transfer Switches to ensure a high-quality, continuous transition.
